Founded: 1974 as National Council to Control Handguns (NCCH), became Handgun Control Inc. in 1980, renamed again to Brady Campaign in 2001 in honor of James and Sarah Brady. The former has been shot and disabled in the 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan. The Bradys were instrumental in the passage of the Brady Act in 1993, which requires a background check on all firearm purchases.
